I saw this question in my inbox the other day:

Can you lose weight by Juicing?

You may have heard of Juicing. It’s one diet that claims some amazing results. But can you lose weight by Juicing? Like with any diet it helps to get informed before starting out. Follow along and I’ll explain.

There’s a lot of confusion when it comes to dieting. Which ones are working and which ones aren’t.

And that’s understandable. The average consumer get’s exposed to tons of bad marketing claiming extraordinary results. As we all know it’s not great when you purchase a product and later find out it didn’t deliver the expected results.

I’ve tried many diets and sadly most doesn’t work. And the few that does are usually complicated or require time to achieve visible results. But there are a few exceptions. One is Juicing which I tried myself with some amazing results.

Juicing has many benefits. For example, it may boost your immune system, make your skin brighter and give the digestive system a break. But I’ve also used it as a way to lose weight with some amazing results.

My Juicing Experience

I started juicing in 2011 after I decided to lose weight and become more fit and active in the gym. At the time, I lived next to a farmers market and I walked there twice a week to buy fresh produce. In addition, I also got some ingredients at local supermarkets such as Safeway and Costco.

I didn’t had a lot of time to do the actual juicing so I made larger batches whenever I could, and stored them in my refrigerator. First I started with drinking juices as a replacement for my lunch. But since my body reacted positively, I switched to only drink juices for one month.

The result was amazing and to this day it’s the most effective diet I’ve come across for weight loss!

Here are some of the positive things I observed:

  • Most of the fat around my waist line disappeared. That’s usually very hard for me to get rid off.
  • My energy levels was the same. I could still work and go to the gym as usual.
  • My mood got better. It was like my body cleansed itself from all the toxic.

There are a few other things to keep in mind when going on a juice diet for a longer period of time. For example the lack of protein and fiber your body will receive. I’ll talk about how I solved those issues in the juicing recipes section below.

If you have a previous medical condition, for example diabetes or high blood pressure, you should consult your doctor before going on a juice diet for a longer period of time.

So can you lose weight by Juicing? Yes for me it’s definitely the best weight loss diet I have found!

Juicing Recipes

I recommend to freely mix different ingredients to experiment what taste best for you. What taste best for me may not be what you prefer. For example I didn’t like to add too much green leafy vegetables. But some of my friends liked the taste if it.

I like to include a good mix of fruits and vegetables. And mixing different colors. My base ingredients were mostly carrots, fruits (peaches, apples and bananas) and green leafy vegetables (kale, spinach).

Here are some of my favorite recipes. They are very easy to make. Just peel the fruits and vegetables and juice them in any order you like.

Sweet and Sour

  • Oranges
  • Lemons
  • Apples
  • Fresh ginger

Color Mix

  • Oranges
  • Strawberries
  • Kale leaves
  • Carrots
  • Bananas

Peachy Electrolytes

  • Lychees
  • Peaches
  • Coconut water

If you are planning to go on a Juicing diet for a longer period of time, there are a few things to keep in mind. First you’ll not get much protein from the juices, which may cause loss of muscle mass in the long run. To address this, in addition to my juices, I also take whey protein in the form of a shake. I use this whey protein from Dymatize. In addition you’ll not get enough fiber, since the juicer will leave this in the pulp. What I do, is to take some of the pulp and mix it back into the finished juice.

This book has many great juicing recipes and was of great help to me when I started with this diet. Highly recommended!

My Juicer

If you want to try juicing, it’s important to have a high quality juicer. There are two types of juicers called centrifugal and slow juicer. I have a centrifugal juicer and I’m very happy with it. It makes amazing juices and looks very stylish. It’s also very easy to clean and not expensive.

I own the Breville BJE200XL Juicer and I highly recommend it. This Juicer will be a great choice when you’re starting out with Juicing.
